Fuelwood Available on Hwy 139
Monday October 4, 2010
Modoc National Forest
A juniper removal project was recently
completed on Hwy 139 by the Devil’s Garden Conservation Crew. The
project starts at the intersection of Hwy 139 and Loveness Road and extends
northwest towards Klamath Falls for 2.4 miles on either side of the highway.
The wood from this project is available
now, but there are a few conditions:
- Cannot pick up till Monday October 4
- Anyone
removing wood from this area must have a fuelwood permit
- Limb
piles are not to be disturbed, these will be burned at a later date
- Anyone
wishing to remove wood from this area must be safely parked off the highway.
CHP is monitoring the area and will issue citations for unsafe parking.
If you have any questions about
this or other fuelwood issues please contact the Modoc National Forest
Supervisor’s Office at (530) 233-5811.
Editors Note: The area
described is on Highway 139 and about 10 miles South of the junction of
Lookout Hackamore Rd. and Highway 139, (between Canby and
the junction).
There
is some confusion as to the legality of picking up stacked wood on the
side of the road. I have asked law enforcement and they sy it is OK to
pick up WITHOUT a fuelwood permit, but this time the National Forest
office says fuelwood permits must be used. Be safe and have one in your
posession.
