Big Valley is about to finally enter the 20th Century when a fiber optic communications line will connect Big Valley to the rest of the world. You may hve seen a small crew working along Highway 299 working their way from Alturas through Big Valley and then to McArthur where it will meet up with another end of a fiber line.
What does this mean? Most of the country (and a good portion of the world) has had it's copper and microwave communications lines replaced with fiber optic lines. Quite literally, the replacement of a copper wire or a microwave link with a single fiber optic line no more than 1/2 inch in diameter will increase the bandwidth capacity by 100 times or more. We may not see much change unless we pay attention. Internet connection speeds, bot on the DSL connections and the wireless connections are going to be improved. Internet traffic is going up, up up with the increased use of video phones (skype) and movie downloads. Even those with good DSL connections often get pauses in viewing video.
Big Valley is finally coming into the 20th century. Maybe soon we will be in the 21st. Who knows, we may even get cable T.V. in town, but don't cross your fingers.
